Smooth Newts in mating display

We have been successfully breeding smooth newts for years, during the mating season the males develop a crested tail, their back feet appear as though they are wearing little black boots and a spike like projection develops at the end of their tails. In the film you will hopefully see the males bending their tails and quivering them to show off to the females. The females are drab in appearance and are very plump, both males and females have an orange underbelly. This footage was filmed inside our education unit, last year. We hope to repeat the process this year as they are wonderful to watch and our visitors love them.

thanks to you guys I have seen something I have never seen before, both your blog and web page are a fantastic source of information. Congratulations to you all on what is a wonderful achievment and i hope to visit your hatchery some day soon. You all obviously care a lot about what you do and respect all aspects of wildlife and not just the fish as some angling clubs do.
